QPR make ‘ambitious’ move for defender

Queens Park Rangers are interested in signing United States international Reggie Cannon on a free transfer.

According to Mike McGrath from the Daily Telegraph, Rangers’ are making an ‘ambitious’ move for the right back.

He said to be ‘poised’ to undergo a medical at the club this week.

Cannon is a free agent after leaving Portuguese side Boavista. He left earlier in the summer following a dispute over unpaid wages.

Cannon is a 25-year-old American international, who can also play at wing-back and centre back.

He joined Boavista in the summer of 2020, and made 72 appearances for them in the league, but failed to score a goal.

He joined Boavista from FC Dallas in the MLS, where he made 75 appearances before his departure. For his nation he has made 28 appearances to date, being a regular for the side since 2018.

Rangers’ currently have Osman Kakay as the only natural right back at the club, although as of late they have been playing with three at the back, with Kakay being used on the right hand side of that three.

They also seem to play more advanced wing-backs, using wingers in those positions such as summer signing Paul Smyth in the right wing back/right midfield position.

With Cannon being able to operate at both wing-back and centre back, he would certainly be a welcome boost to the R’s to bolster not only their back line but even their options going forward.

QPR had been looking to bolster these positions after previously going for Peterborough defender Josh Knight, who could also have allure the positions Cannon can.

If signed in time, he could make his debut in Friday night’s clash against Birmingham City.
